Inside Job

Inside Job

by Eva-Maria Sher

There is no hiding in the past

or future. The ancestors

are here now, and this woman standing

on their shoulders—however frail

they may seem—won’t kid herself:

she allows herself to sink, feels

their hands touch

her ankles, becomes the child

grasping for balance, looks

for the word that started it all.

You may say, this is not

for me, this is not my type of thing

but let yourself turn

and feel the touch

of their breath…

their longing to become flesh.
